A New Need for Traffic Lights
Space is getting crowded. That's the latest worry for many scientists. About ten thousand objects are orbiting our planet now. Some are satellites that have a job to do. Other items have finished their work. Parts of rockets may have been discarded during a flight and left behind in space.
This is becoming a real problem. More items in space lead to more danger. Some of the objects now floating through space are just a few inches in size. But they can still do harm. If they hit a spacecraft or spacelab, they might destroy it.
Space agencies can now locate objects in space with a computer. Yet, accidents still happen. Someone may see that two objects seem to be very close. But they have no power to prevent the crash. Experts can only plot courses to help future rockets avoid some of the objects.
  MODEL TEST FOUR

  SECTION A CONVERSATIONS
In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions.
  Now listen to the conversation.
M: What trouble are you having with your eyes?
W: Well, I'm a bit tired and you know I do a lot of reading because of my work and besides our room is in the basement in the Department of English and we always work with electric light. I'm very tired I think.
M: Does the print get blurred as you're reading at all?
W: Sometimes, yes, especially at night.
M: You manage in the distance all right?
W: Yes. And also you see, doctor, I drive so erm you know this check-up is absolutely necessary.
M: What I want you to do is to look into the distance. Right! Look through me.
  W: Through you?
M: Right you are. I'm going to shine a light in your eyes don't worry about that.
  W: Ok.
M: Your eyes, they are completely healthy. You just need slightly different glasses. It'll make you see a little bit clearer and a little stronger, but your eyes are basically normal.
W: Doctor, erm what do you think about contact lenses? Do you think it's worthwhile for me getting some or not?
M: Not in your case. If your left eye was as bad as your right eye, I would say yes, but at the moment you see nicely with your left eye nakedly.
Questions 5 to 7 are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions.
  Now listen to the conversation.
W: Oh, no! Hey, Ed, the toilet's still running over. Didn't you call the plumber?
  M: I didn't have time today, Honey.
W: But you told me you were going to call him today. What were you doing all day? I mean, after all, it only takes five minutes to call the plumber.
M: I was working on a project for school all day. I got so involved I forgot all about it, okay?
W: Welt, I called you from work this morning at 9 o'clock to remind you of it. How come you didn't answer the phone?
M: At 97 Oh, that was you calling. I was taking a shower at the time. Hey, since you had time to call me from work, why didn't you call the plumber from work?
W: Because you said you were going to! And besides, I didn't have the number with me. And please take off the earphones!
M: Look, you have the Yellow Pages at work, don't you? Why didn't you look up the number at work?
W: Just, just forget it! I'm wasting my breath talking to you. From now on, if I want anything done around here, I'll just do it myself.
M: Okay, I'm sorry. There is no point in us arguing until we're both blue in the face, all right?
W: Yeah, we're not getting anywhere this way. I'll call them.
Questions8 to 10 are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions.
  Now listen to the conversation.
W: Professor Smith, I want to change my major from Computer Programming to Computer Technology. What should I do?
M: What do you say we take a few moments to discuss this?
  W: I think we should.
M: Do you think it is wise to change your major after you've studied for two years already?
W: Well, many of the courses I've taken for a Computer Programming degree are valuable for a Computer Technology degree.
M: That's true. How about your parents? Do they agree with you?
W: I'm on my own. It's up to me.
M: If I were you, I would find out how many job openings there are for computer technologists.
W: I have. There are many openings.
M: I suggest you pursue the career you like most.
W: But I can't. I've never taken courses in Computer Technology. How can I compare the two?
M: You'd better take a few courses in Computer Technology first and then, you can decide afterwards.
  W: That's a good idea.
M: Then, I suggest you make arrangements to take two courses in Computer Technology immediately.
  W: Thank you.
