West African leaders Friday held emergency talks on the political crisis in the Ivory Coast as pressure mounted on President Laurent Gbagbo to concede defeat in last month's election and leave office.
It is the second time the leaders have met to try to get Mr. Gbagbo to end his continuing claim to be president. The United Nations, the United States and various regional bodies have recognized his rival, Alassane Ouattara, as the legitimate winner of the election.
The West African leaders ((part of the 15-member Economic Community of Western African States)) met in the Nigerian capital Abuja. They have not publicly discussed what actions they might take to end the Ivory Coast standoff and election-related violence has led to the deaths of more than 170 people.
Analysts say that travel sanctions could be imposed on the country.
Meanwhile, West Africa's central bank has cut off Mr. Gbagbo's access to state money. That may limit his ability to pay civil servants and soldiers in the military still loyal to him. Meanwhile, state-controlled television was knocked off the air in most cities outside Abidjan, the country's largest city.
