Increasingly more urban white collars are going online to live an agrarian existence.
It’s all about the fun-loving agricultural lifestyle on Happy Farm, a free game featured on Chinese Facebook-like websites, kaixin001.com, xiaonei. com and Tencent’s Q-zone, as well as Facebook.
Happy Farm isn’t just about raising crops and livestock, however. There’s cattle rustling and garden raids by friends and neighbors.
“The most exciting part of Happy Farm is stealing vegetable or cattle from my neighbors,” said Yao Xiaomei, 25, a professional at a State-owned company in Beijing who unwinds after work on Happy Farm.
“My colleagues and friends get a kick out of ‘stealing’ from each other. Some even get ‘angry’ warnings saying, ‘watch out, or you’ll pay for it!’” she told the Global Times.
Yao is one of an estimated 15 million urban white-collar workers who spend more than five hours a day down on the Happy Farm, according to data from the game’s creator, Five Minutes, a Shanghai-based SNS developer.
Though the basic Happy Farm game is free for users, it’s profitable to the social networking sites and its creator due to its popularity.
Yang Hui, an software engineer from a Beijing-based SNS game developer, told the Global Times, “Happy Farm could at least bring a game developer a monthly income of 4 million yuan ($512,000) based on its huge number of users.”
According to Xu Chaojun, CEO of xiaonei.com, Happy Farm has brought the company a weekly income of 100,000 yuan ($15,000), since Five Minutes sold the game to more than three Chinese social networking websites including his.
He also predicted that the monthly income could exceed 4 million yuan ($585,000) with advertising and value-added services.
“Theoretically, an SNS developer would make more money through advertising and value-added services since the game itself is free,”said Yang from the Beijing-based SNS game developer.
“In most cases, the developer sells the game straight to the social networking websites, while the latter would advertise on the game, and the two will share a certain proportion of the earnings,” He noted.
“But advertising is not the major way to earn money on Happy Farm. The developer sells virtual farm equipment and tools to players. And users get better quality seeds or equipment. Many are willing to buy these virtual items in real life,” Yang said.
Happy Farm got its biggest boost when it was adapted and sold to Facebook in April for its first step into the overseas market.
Facebook said the number of Happy Farmers reached 700,000 during the first two months, and provides the company 30 to 40 percent of its monthly revenue.
“It is easy to understand why it is so popular, since the game is very straightforward and is easy to play for people of all ages,” Five Minutes’ CEO Xu Cheng explained the reason to the Global Times,“Becuase most Chinese white collars have little amusement after work, Happy Farm gives them a virtual world to make their dreams come true.”
