笔者认为，考生拿到作文题后，不要盲目下笔，要按审题、列提纲、扩展成文三部曲的做法来完成。
以Modern Industry 为题， 写一篇不少于150词的短文，要求包括下列各点。
1）    现代工业改变了我们生活方式。 
2）    现代工业污染了我们的环境。
3）   现代工业带来的问题可以通过进一步发展工业来解决。
这是一个带来汉语提示的作文，如果我们将提示的文字译成英语，原先的三个提示就成了三个主题句。
1）    Modern industry has changed our way of life. 
2）    Modern industry has been polluting our environment.
3）    The problem modern industry has brought about can be solved through further industrial development .
然后列提纲如下：
Modern Industry
1)      Changes of way of life 
A.   Travel
Past : walking, horse riding
Present: by bus , train or plane 
B.    Communications
Past: letter, written or oral
Present: telegram, telephone , fax
C.   Electric appliances
Past: none , housework done by hand
Present: washing machine , refrigerator, television etc.
2)   Pollution of environment
A.   air pollution: cars, power plant, chemical fertilizer plant 
B . Water pollution: waste water from factories
 
3)   Improvements
A.   Energy : electricity and solar energy
B.    Purification: treatment of polluted air and water.

Modern industry has changed our way of life . In the past, we traveled from one place to another either on foot or on a horse back , but now we do it by bus , train or plane .Our modern men communicate with one another over long distances by telegram, telephone, telex or fax , but in the past, men did it by sending a letter only , At home , we now have all the electric appliances such as the washing machine , refrigerator, TV and others. But in the past , we did our housework all by hand and we had no household entertainments.
Modern industry also has seriously polluted our environment. Cars add much waste to the air that is already polluted by power and chemical fertilizer plants .The poisonous water from the paper mills and fertilizer factories find its way into our rivers and pollute our water, Nowadays pollution is so serious that our air is unfit to breathe and our water is unfit to drink.
These problems, however, can be solved through further industrial development. For example, we can use electricity and solar energy instead of burning coal. Besides, we can take measures to have the industrial waste purified before it goes into air or water. We believe the more advanced industry will certainly be more capable of taking care of its waste.
