Toast at Reception Celebrating The 63rd Anniversary of the Founding of The People’s Republic of China

　　各位来宾，各位朋友，同志们：

　　Distinguished guests,

　　Friends and comrades,

　　在这金秋时节，迎来了中华人民共和国成立六十三周年。我代表党中央、国务院，向全国各族人民致以节日的祝贺！向港澳同胞、台湾同胞和海外侨胞，致以亲切的问候！向关心、支持中国现代化建设的国际友人，表示诚挚的感谢！

　　We are gathered here on this beautiful autumn day to celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council, I wish to extend festive greetings to people of all ethnic groups and warm regards to our compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and the overseas Chinese communities. I also wish to express heartfelt thanks to all the foreign friends who have shown understanding for and supported China in its modernization drive.

　　六十三年前的今天，中华民族结束了近代以来百年屈辱和苦难的历史，一个崭新的中国出现在世界的东方。新中国成立特别是改革开放以来，在中国共产党领导下，全国各族人民团结奋斗，国家面貌发生了翻天覆地的变化，经济持续快速发展，人民生活显著改善，综合国力和国际影响力大幅提升。每个中国人都有理由为此感到自豪。

　　Sixty-three years ago today, the Chinese nation put an end to a century of humiliation and suffering in its modern history, and a new China stood up in the east of the world. Since then and especially since the launch of reform and opening-up, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups have been united as one and worked tenaciously under the leadership of the CPC, bringing tremendous changes to the country. The Chinese economy has maintained fast growth; people’s livelihood has improved markedly; and China’s overall national strength and international influence have grown significantly. Every Chinese has reason to take pride in these achievements.

　　今年，我国改革开放和现代化建设又取得新成绩。在国际形势复杂多变、面临困难明显增多的情况下，我们按照稳中求进的工作总基调，加强和改善宏观调控，把稳增长放在更加重要的位置，保持了经济平稳较快发展，城镇新增就业持续增加，居民收入明显增长，城乡居民基本养老、基本医疗制度初步实现全覆盖，社会保持和谐稳定。

　　This year has witnessed new progress in China’s reform, opening-up and modernization endeavors. In the face of the complex and volatile international situation and growing difficulties, we have followed the overall guideline of making progress while ensuring stability, strengthened and improved macro regulation and given greater priority to stabilizing growth. As a result, we have maintained steady and robust economic growth, created new urban jobs, considerably increased people’s income, achieved initial universal coverage of basic old-age insurance and basic medical insurance for both urban and rural residents, and maintained social stability and harmony.

　　在成绩面前，我们要时刻保持清醒头脑。我国还处于社会主义初级阶段，生产力还不发达，要把我国建设成为富强民主文明和谐的社会主义现代化国家，还要走很长的路。

　　While recognizing achievements, we must always keep a cool head. Our country is still at the primary stage of socialism and the productivity is not high. There is still a long way to go before we can build China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious.

　　面向未来，我们信心满怀。我国的发展仍然处于重要战略机遇期，我们已经具备了更加坚实的发展基础，改革开放的伟大力量和中华民族自强不息的伟大精神，将推动中国走向更加光明的未来！我们要坚定不移地推进经济、政治、文化、社会等各方面的体制改革，坚持对外开放的基本国策，进一步解放和发展生产力，发展社会主义民主法治，维护社会公平正义，提高国民素质和道德水准，实现人的自由和全面发展。在一个十几亿人口的发展中国家进行现代化建设，是前无古人的事业，需要进行艰苦探索，但任何困难都阻挡不了我们前进的步伐！

　　Looking ahead, we are full of confidence. We are in an important period of strategic opportunities for development. We have laid a more solid foundation for development. And the power of reform and opening-up as well as the persevering spirit of the Chinese nation will lead China to a brighter future. We must steadfastly advance institutional reforms in economic, political, cultural, social and other fields, stick to the basic state policy of opening-up and further unleash and grow productivity. We must promote socialist democracy and rule of law, uphold social equity and justice, improve the educational and moral standards of our people and achieve freedom and all-round development of the people. To realize modernization in a developing country with over one billion people is an unprecedented endeavor that needs painstaking exploration. But no hardship will prevent us from forging ahead.

　　各位来宾，朋友们，同志们：

　　Friends and comrades,

　　我们将继续坚持“一国两制”、“港人治港”、“澳人治澳”、高度自治的方针，与广大港澳同胞一道，共同维护香港、澳门的长期繁荣稳定。

　　We will continue to follow the principle of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong", "Macao people administering Macao" and a high degree of autonomy. We will work with our compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao to maintain long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao.

　　我们将继续推进两岸和平发展，携手广大台湾同胞，共同推进祖国和平统一大业。

　　We will continue to promote peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits and work with our compatriots in Taiwan to advance the great cause of peaceful reunification of the motherland.

　　我们将奉行独立自主的和平外交政策，坚决维护国家主权和领土完整。

　　We will pursue an independent foreign policy of peace and firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

　　我们将与各国人民携手努力，共享发展机遇，共同应对各种挑战，建设持久和平、共同繁荣的和谐世界。

　　We will join hands with people around the world to share development opportunities, meet challenges and build a harmonious world of durable peace and common prosperity.

　　来宾们，朋友们，同志们：

　　Friends and comrades,

　　中国共产党第十八次全国代表大会即将召开。这是一次承前启后、继往开来的重要会议。我们将始终不渝地坚持党的基本路线，坚定不移地走中国特色社会主义道路。让我们更加紧密地团结在以胡锦涛同志为总书记的党中央周围，高举中国特色社会主义伟大旗帜，以邓小平理论和“三个代表”重要思想为指导，深入贯彻落实科学发展观，为国家强盛和民族复兴而努力奋斗！

　　The 18th National Congress of the CPC will be held soon. This will be an important meeting for us to build on past achievements and open up new prospects for future development. We will unswervingly follow the basic line of the Party and stay committed to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Let us rally more closely around the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Hu Jintao as the General Secretary, hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, follow the guidance of Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of "Three Represents", fully implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and work hard for China’s prosperity and rejuvenation.

　　to the friendship and cooperation between the Chinese people and people around the world, and

　　为来宾们、朋友们和同志们的健康，

　　to the health of all the distinguished guests, friends and comrades present.
